Tiltology - The Tilt Wiki

Tiltology is our science about the evolution of personality development. It's based on a theory of personality and character development that goes way beyond "Typology"

Aristotle's Golden Mean Bookmark

The Measurement Scale on the Tilt 365 Positive Influence Predictor is based on Aristotle's Golden Mean.

The Tilt 365 Scale:

The development the Tilt system, author & researcher Pam Boney, developed 48 trait continuums to measure the 12 character strengths for whole-brain development represented in the Tilt 365 system.

Examples in the system:

Confidence, a character strength, if taken to excess would manifest as arrogance and if deficient as insecurity.
Discipline, a virtue, if taken to excess would manifest as obsessive and if deficient as undisciplined.
Compassion, a virtue, if taken to excess would manifest as permissive and if deficient as insensitive.

In the system, traits that are deficient are called underdeveloped traits and those that are excessive are called overused traits.

The Tilt 365 system contains 48 virtues (positive human traits) and measures development of the mean in healthy behavior that is conducive for productivity, collaboration & innovation in team-level climate and company culture.

Agile Mindset & Positive Influence- Tilt Blue Zone

Human Need: To be responsive and shift to context at will.
Mindset: Shifts to context with balance, ease and flow.

(All four Tilt patterns are easy and automatically wired-in so they are available to you).

Here we have become our most agile, conscious, creative, actualized, authentic self and operate with a mindset that contains regard for self, others and the greater community all at once. We operate from character strength more of the time and don't take ourselves or others too seriously to miss the point of a wonderfully diverse world. This means we embrace all four previous mindsets in ourselves but now we are mindfully present and CONSCIOUS as we move into the various mindsets, aware of the temptations and drawbacks of each. This is called a Holarchy.

Adaptive Mindset Bookmark

Adaptive Mindset- Tilt Green Zone
Human Need: Freedom to be special and unique.
Mindset: Adaptive & Inclusive-Open to input with a strong need for social inclusion.

In this mindset, one is intuitive about others and will expend great amounts of effort to adapt and include a variety of diverse ideas and people. When in this mindset, one is open to continuous learning and spontaneous improvisation. The focus is on collaboration in social community and harmony with a wide network of others. The desire is to interact with others in respectful and generous ways so that ones' true authentic nature can find it's own voice.

About True Tilt Leadership Bookmark

About True Tilt Leadership
The True Tilt Leadership Model may be the only leadership model of note that was designed by a woman for an age where the archetypal aspects of the feminine are coming into balance with the power of the masculine, where both men and women are making strides to balance both aspects in their inner concept. Women are coming into their natural power. Men are coming into their natural compassion. The True Tilt Model balances both masculine and feminine aspects of character strength on one dimension and on the other, balances two polar aspects of thinking that are also evolving into balance. Human philosophical thinking has evolved over time from a negativity bias (wisdom & the stoics) toward a positivity bias (resilience & the epicurians) and both are coming into balance in the age of conscious capitalism. Thanks to the work of such thought leaders like Riane Eisler, who wrote The Challice and the Blade, and The Partnership Way, many are beginning to realize the important of being balanced in opposing energies in order to evolve our thinking to new levels. Author of the True Tilt Leadership Model, Pam Boney takes leadership to a personal level and points the work within to the self-concept, inner beliefs and manifesting our actualized self into the world at large for impact.

The rise of a new kind of leader, makes way for higher levels of conscious leadership. Through the intentional development of all twelve archetypes in Tiltology, leaders can become balanced, conscious, creative and inspired. Instead of being a type, we Tilt into all twelve archetypal patterns as needed, to maximize our agility to work within a dynamic and ever evolving world of work.

About the Tiltology Theory Bookmark

About the Tiltology Theory
What is the science of Tiltology?

Tiltology is a theory of personality and character development that goes way beyond "Typology". Pam Boney, author of the Tilt Theory, teaches that thinking of oneself in terms of "a personality type" imposes self-limiting beliefs on the development of a whole and complete self-concept. Her research, which spans across two decades, introduces a premise that expands self-concept to a whole-person, whole-brain approach to development of identity from the inside-out. Tiltology is the study of 12 sets of Tilt Personas or "character tilts" that live within us all and "want to come alive" through the journey of our psychological development. The exact trajectory of this journey is completely unique to each person and can be chronicled and measured through a new "live" web app called Tilt 365. Supported by a worldwide coaching network, Tilt Practitioners are there to help people along this personal development journey to expand positive influence and help people become "Contributors" instead of "Takers". Most of us are unaware of the ways we "take" from others to fulfill unconscious unmet needs that often shape our behavior. A common quote you'll hear in Tilt classes is "Do you have your personality?....or does IT have you?"

Tiltology: A New Personality Theory for a New Age of Wisdom

Yes, we all start with certain personality preferences that become our life script for much of our life if we stay unconscious to the patterns we project into the world. These patterns can become a self-fulfilling prophecy and produce a life and outcomes that mirror the early beliefs we record about ourselves. Yet if we take charge and choose to become conscious of these patterns and learn about the four Tilting Patterns that exists in all of us to varying extremes, we have a chance to align with our true self, become more balanced and self-directed and can change the course of our life in exponential ways. This requires an intentional choice by each of us as individuals. To become balanced, conscious, creative and inspired by our own life purpose can be the single most important game changer in life.

In order to actualize our full potential, it helps to engage others to become a "witness to our lives" and invite them to be the mirror of "who we are being in the world" so our blind spots are revealed to us one by one. Tilt 365 gives us a way to accelerate that development and catalyze change more quickly. As we invite people we trust to become observers of our patterns, we can learn about what we are projecting into the world. Then we can change in a more focused and intentional way. Not to please others but to fulfill our own most important development goal...to achieve a sense of wholeness and fulfillment that allows us to be our real selves no matter where we are and no matter what happens around us. This kind of character and sense of self does not happen by accident. It happens by personal choice and tenacity acquired through a commitment to daily practices that anchor our sense of self in four important identity development objectives: self-aceptance, self-respect, self-value and self-regard. And when we feel good about ourselves from the inside-out, we are able to interact better with others on the outside. We become contributors to those around us and they are inspired to be themselves too.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy & Self-Awareness & Openness to Continuous Learning

Our emotional and mental capacity for being balanced is key to the Tilt 365 system and theory of personality development & character. Why? Because we know that the brain looks for what will protect us and creates synapses in our brain that are called heuristics. These rules of thumb may accurately reflect reality OR THEY MAY NOT in which case, our mental capacity to expand our learning is critical to development of more expansive potential. For example, if my first three experiences of interacting with men with a mustache are all negative experiences, then my brain may record this data and hence forward will look for validation of this rule of thumb that is designed to keep me safe and I may recoil or withdraw whenever I encounter a man with a mustache. Yet, three pieces of data in the real world, do not equate to a trend that can be trusted or relied upon statistically, right? After all, it could simply have been a coincidence that I had these three experiences early in my life.

In order to stay open to a larger set of data to form conclusions, my brain would do better to remain open to new learnings that might dispute the first heuristic recorded in my neural networks. They key is to grow our intellectual capacity over time to allow for openness to learning what may benefit us, despite our first experiences. This ability to form quick hueristics is very valuable to rapid learning. We are like a huge sponge when we are young, learning exponentially to navigate a complex world. Indeed, touching a hot stove will hurt us and it's good to be able to learn this the first time. Other situations are not so back and white and require us to grow in discernment over time, while staying open to being wrong at times.

Self-Awareness is the Key

Yet, this capacity can also limit our potential if we don't learn about how the brain patterns in our subconscious memory work. About 88% of what we learn becomes subconscious memory because we can only keep so much information in our conscious awareness at any given time. Therefore the brain is simply being efficient when it records our experiences for future reference in our long term memory, pulling it back out only when patterns emerge that call for application. This is why continuous learning is so crucial to developing beyond your originally recorded belief systems. We ask others to support our self-awareness only because so much of what we do is old programming and we are unaware of it. Having trusted observers is essential to our growth and untapped potential.

The Continuous Learning Loop

Our growth is dependent on our ability to stay open to learning versus reliance on a system of beliefs that may be antiquated as the external world around us evolves and changes over time. Our old beliefs may have helped us survive our family of origin, but they may do quite the opposite in new systems we encounter that have very different dynamics. For example, if I had a bad experience in my teens with a good friend who betrayed a trust, then I may carry a deeply ingrained belief that good friends cannot be trusted. This would be an overgeneralization (a distorted thinking pattern) that may not be true for ALL good friends in my future. If I were to rely on this emotionally distorted belief for life, I might never be capable of forming deep friendships with those than I can generally trust and this would be life-limited in an important way. Just because one friend, or even two appear to have betrayed my trust, this is not sound reasoning to apply to everyone I meet in my future. Yet, the emotional centers of the brain have recorded an emotional record (memory) of this experience that is emotionally charged, so it becomes a trigger for me to withdraw and withhold trust. If someone behaves in similar ways, even remotely, the trigger of warning will go off in my brain and stimulate a fear-response. Yet, as you my guess, this fear-response might not be called for in every circumstance. Every person on the planet is unique, so applying such rules of thumb to ALL friends is not in our service. For this reason, we should NOTICE the trigger and inner response we have to some friends, but be alert to finding out if our old experience applies to this new experience. Some call this the Self-Imposed Glass Ceiling (see visual below). We can unwittingly limit our experiences and potential by giving too much credence to our old self-limiting beliefs. Therefore, we must keep a continuous learning loop open all the time for new experiences and learn not to shut down all systems when we encounter a trigger event.

The Self-Imposed Glass Ceiling

Some might call this phenomenon the fear of success. Others call it the Upper Limit Problem (Gay Hendricks). This phenomenon presents when things are going so well that your psyche intuits that you are going to have to break some old barriers and move beyond them. You are ready to grow, your mind is reaching a capacity beyond your current performance and yet, there are underlying warning triggers telling your gut to be careful. The brain likes to rely on heuristics, or rules of thumb that have been recorded concerning your old environment that were recorded based on your own limited experiences. So, if your outer world did not change, these warning mechanisms might be very accurate warning systems. However, when you are ready to grow beyond them, your thinking and intuitions must operate from higher levels of thinking than those that were recorded if you are to break through to new levels of potential. The key is to stay alert and know what those warnings are trying to tell you, while boldly moving forward to test their theories against a new environment, new encounters and new lessons. The only way to achieve transcending growth to actualize your full potential is to break these old self-limiting beliefs and form new ones. Trusting the ever-increasing wisdom inside you can help you move beyond the emotive reactions to the past.

The Polarities of the Creative Whole-Brain Mind

So, what is the link between character strengths and creativity? In our research, documented over the last four years, we have found that when a person develops balance in their personality (accomplished through a balanced set of character strengths in the Tilt model), there is a direct link to creating a team climate where everyone can perform at their most productive, creative and innovative best. A score of 3.5 or better in all four quadrants of Tilt predicts a climate for creative collaboration. We used a control instrument called the Situational Outlook Questionaire to measure this phenomenon. The SOQ measures nine dimensions of team-level climate for creativity and innovation and there was a strong correlation in subjects who took both the Tilt assessment and the SOQ. Our hypothesis about why this might be true is fascinating. In essence, it was our theory that when a person operates from strength instead of fear-based self-protection or self-davancing behavior, others feel safe around them. Scoring a 3.5 or better on the Tilt measures is an indicator for higher level consciousness in behavior. In short, the person with higher scores on Tilt is behaving in ways that are more conscious and evolved (higher self). When this happens, others follow by example and are able to spend their energy focused on the creative work they are doing together, rather on defending self-protective or self-advancing motives. When the drama, stress, chaos and politics of lower level behaviors are not present, the group can move their energy to productive and creative work together. What is actually happening is everyone is able to think in polarities, using non-dualistic thinking, so everyone's preferences are considered in the process. Note: See Polarity Thinking.

The Tilt system encourages what we call polarity-thinking. Instead of hard and fast rules that are black and white (the simplest form of decision making in the brain), our actualization required a more complex level of reasoning. This higher level of thinking goes beyond "either-or" thinking (dualistic) to "both-and" thinking (non-dualistic) which requires a broader range of analysis in decisions.

Example of Polarity-Thinking in the Tilt System:

Resilience + Wisdom

Philosophical Character Strengths are about mental or psychological resilience that helps us to operate from an optimistic bias contained in a belief system that looks for positive signs in the world (versus looking for negative signs in the world). Philosophical character strengths can be self-fulfilling in that our brain is trained to learn a lesson and then look for signs to validate that lesson. So if we learn something negative, our brain may begin to search for evidence to validate the learning. Likewise, if we learn something positive, our brain will search for evidence to validate that learning as well. Since we benefit from learning either way, both are necessary, but they need to be balanced. Too much optimism in our bias, and we become naive and subject to danger. Too much pessimism in our bias, and we become skeptical and untrusting which renders us rigid to what might be positive. The character strengths in Resilience are important to our ability get back up after a challenge and keep faith that we can still create a positive outcome despite negative experiences. Our ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment is captured in this important set of character strengths. Especially in a technological age, change is so inherent in our lives, that resilience is becoming more and more important to our survival skills.

Interpreting Your Tilt 365 Results:

If you have a score of less than 3.5 in any of the 12 character strengths, then you may be operating from fear instead of character strength. This can be subtle and a blind spot for you to observe for a period of time until it comes to you, Or it could be obvious to you and you'll know what to do to correct it quickly. In either case, a low score means that you are either under-developed in this area (deficient in the character strength) or that you are overcompensating and overusing it and going to extremes in the application of the character strength. Both represent some kind of hidden fear that is driving the behavior and making it fall outside of the middle zone. This creates stress, conflict, drama and other reactionary affects in relationships.

About the Tilt Color Zones Bookmark

Notice that scores on Tilt 365 fall in five different zones, with colors associated with each. We call these the five mindsets because each contains a point of view that presupposes a certain approach to the situation. Everyone moves up and down into various color zones throughout each day, responding to the external cues in the environment. Yet, as we expand and grow stronger in our inner core, we hang out in an open mindset that allows us to shift into any of the four swiftly, as needed by the current context. As this happens, our capacity for being more open to learning, more flexible and responsive to circumstances, and more open to various points of view is expanded. The wider the capacity, the more positive flow can come through us and into the world around us.

The five mindsets refer to psychological development in a variety of perspectives which occurs when we become more conscious and complex in our ability to respond to our environment. Instead of black and white thinking (dualistic), we evolve into mental states that can include two different approaches at once (non-dualistic). For example, instead of seeing ourselves as either introverted or extroverted, we begin to see ourselves as capable of both mindsets and make a conscious choice about which approach is appropriate to the situation.

Protective Mindset- Tilt Red Zone
Human Need: Significance & Status
Mindset: Protective & Forceful-Closed to input with a strong need to prevent risk.

In this mindset we are intently focused on tasks and efficiency for the sake of execution. We are a guardian of rules and boundaries that protect.

Competitive Mindset- Tilt Orange Zone
Human Need: Autonomy & Power
Mindset: Competitive & Futuristic- Closed to input with a strong need for urgent action.

In this mindset we are confidently focused on promoting our ideas for swift results. We are a champion of meaningful purpose and catalyze change.
Integrative Mindset- Tilt Yellow Zone
Human Need: Acceptance & Belonging
Mindset: Integrative & Inclusive- Open to Input with a strong need for social harmony.

In this mindset we are circumspect about risk and thorough in analysis of the best way forward. We are an investigator of details and, therefore, trusted advisors.

Adaptive Mindset- Tilt Green Zone
Human Need: Freedom to be special and valued.
Mindset: Adaptive & Inclusive-Open to input with a strong need for social inclusion.

In this mindset we are socially intuitive and inclusive, wanting harmony and happiness for all. We are entertaining storytellers and cross pollinate ideas socially.

Agile Positive Influence- Tilt Blue Zone

Human Need: To be responsive, not reactive and to able to consciously shift to context at will.

When we grow into our higher self, we become more agile, more flexible and more inclusive. This means we are even more inclusive of ALL OF OURSELVES, so we embrace all four previous mindsets in ourselves but now we are mindfully present and CONSCIOUS as we move into the various mindsets, aware of the temptations and drawbacks of each. This is called a Holarchy.

The difference is whether we are CONSCIOUS of our behavior and it's purposes and strategies. Note, that as your character strengths grow more balanced in all four mindsets, the expansiveness of your influence grows wider.

About the Goals for Tilt 365 Bookmark

Goals
The objective of the Tilt 365 system is to develop your personal Balance, Positive Influence, and Fulfillment:

Goal # 1: BALANCE
(Score of 3. 0 or better). The first objective is to achieve a level of personal BALANCE with a score of 3.5 in all four quadrants (Humanity, Wisdom, Courage and Resilience). If your score is 3.5 or better from total observers in all four quadrants, you personality traits are “in BALANCE”, meaning you can draw from both sides of thinking at once. Yet you may still have to work at your less-developed character strengths when stress or pressure. Otherwise, if you remain Tilted to one side exclusively, you could be tempted to default to the lower zones of your natural Tilt where you are less likely to be aware of your impact. Balance happens when we feel more secure and our inner core is developing naturally.

Goal # 2: POSITIVE INFLUENCE
(Score of 3.5 or better). Once you have achieved balance, the next goal is to work toward becoming a consistent and robust Positive Influence. If your score is 3.5 or better in all four quadrants (Humanity, Wisdom, Courage and Resilience), you demonstrate a comfort with your environment that enables a consistent ability to be a Positive Influence with ease and rarely get out of balance or block flow. Because of a balanced state of conscious awareness, you easily create a climate that enables high levels of productivity and creative output around you as well. If you are balanced (above a 3.0) in at least two quadrants and a 3.5 or better in the other two, then you are creating positive influence, but may not be doing so in all situations or all of the time. Staying focused on your character-strength quadrants, while staying open to help from others who have character strength in your opposite quadrants, can still produce excellent collaborative results. Yet in this case, you need the other person to shore up your weaker side in order to be at your best and maintain the energetic flow.

There is overwhelming evidence that the higher the level of self-esteem, the more likely one will be to treat others with respect, kindness, and generosity. –Nathaniel Branden

Goal # 3: CREATIVE FLOW

(Score above 4.5 from all others in all four quadrants). This indicates that you are not only generating positive influence but are also likely to be experiencing a phenomenon calledFlow or Zone, where you are focused on doing work that is an expression of your best creative effort. Others are resonating with your ability to apply complex reasoning that includes all aspects of whole-brain thinking.

Goal # 4: FULFILLMENT
(Self-scores above 4.0) Beyond externally focused achievement, there is something that can be much more satisfying- the inner sense of accomplishment we feel when we tackle new challenges and master them. This experience changes us both fundamentally and permanently because it increases our positive self-regard and self-respect. Your self-scores are most indicative of this phenomenon. Scores from others in the upper range zones (above 4.0) is direct validation that you at least look like you are doing fulfilling work that is expressing your unique genius.

Intentional Tilting

Life has its ups and downs and we sometimes need to challenge ourselves to grow, when we consciously choose to knock ourselves out of these higher levels for a time while we tackle a new skill or project. But the goal remains the same- to make the climb back up to these levels again after each new stretch challenge. For example, a person may go to graduate school to deepen their knowledge – increasing character strength in the Wisdom quadrant. As they immerse themselves in research they may notice that they shift out of balance with the opposing quadrant of Resilience – erring on the side of being factual and skeptical where they could lose touch with their imaginative, creative and inspiring aspects. As you integrate new learning, you may Tilt in a particular direction for a while as you bring news skills into your repertoire.

Expanding Your Positive Influence

The inner state in the Green and Blue zones is most important for our own emotional experience of fulfillment, but it has an impact on others too. When our thoughts, feelings, words and actions all come into alignment to accomplish something, an unintentional by-product is that our personal influence with others begins to expand and soar. When we grow and evolve our inner-selves, our outer world begins to change. Accomplishment of this sort can contribute to the world in meaningful ways, even when that wasn’t the original point of the effort.

About the Four Tilts Bookmark

About the Four Tilts
The Four Tilting Patterns

When developing whole-brain capacity, we need to develop four ways of thinking (or otherwise called Ways of Being in Tiltology). To develop each, we need to intentionally lean into or "tilt" into a new complex set of behavior patterns to get them neurologically wired. Once wired successfully, we can access more complex reasoning for whole-brain decision-making.

True Tilt vs. Adaptive Tilting Patterns

There may be a difference between your natural or "True Tilt" and your current adaptive Tilting pattern. We are all born with a set of patterns that are innate and we also learn to adapt to our environment in many creative ways that ensure we can survive and thrive in an often unfriendly environment. This doesn't mean you are not being yourself. It simply means that you have the intelligence and agility to adapt to different ways of being that are more appropriate for diverse conditions. The more agility you learn, the more you are able to thrive in new settings that could present new conditions to navigate. In a world where conditions are dynamic and rapidly shifting, we benefit from learning various ways of being. When we develop the ability to shift into any of the FOUR Tilting patterns at will, we call this the 5th way. The 5th way, means that you are evolved and whole. Essentially, you are all four ways of being at once and acting in service of your true self.

1. The Structure Tilt

Description: (Combines Wisdom Character Strengths & Courage Character Strengths)

"Structure" Way of Being: Organized for execution. Employs Sequential Reasoning Skills.

When you are Tilting in STRUCTURE it means that you appear to be focused on connecting INFORMATION and ACTION and have a natural proclivity for masterminding or building intricate, precise systems that offer stability and sustainability to the world.

TEAM ROLE: The Master Mind

TOP CHARACTER STRENGTHS: Your greatest gift to the world is EXECUTION, especially for building complex systems that have to fit together in some kind of sequential order that employs rational reasoning and concentration. Your brain is wired to be able to handle a lot of facts and organize them into refined systems that bring order and integrity to bear.

PASSIONS: Your top passions are related to precision, accuracy, efficiency, complex tasks and actions. Your top thinking skill is complex problem solving and your top feeling skill is integrity about doing everything you do with a high degree of conscientiousness. Doing the right thing and doing it well is important to you.

SHADOW (Denied-self): The thing you most resist is social connection because it distracts you from your goal, which is execution of complex tasks. You might say you have an allergy to social connection (the Tilt opposite your preference) and because of this, it feels awkward and uncomfortable at times.

AVOIDANCE STRATEGY (avoidance of your shadow): You might unwittingly be tempted to view others as the main interference to your goals, so you may unwittingly push away from them and distance yourself from the one thing you need most; deep and pleasurable social connection.

FAULTY STORY: Your inner story is that you must remove flaws from the world through your work, but deep down your true fear is that you are somehow flawed yourself and will be judged for this, so you work hard to stay superior to or “above” others in some predictable way by being an expert.

DEVELOPMENT GOAL: As you actualize and grow, you begin to realize that you are already perfect in your imperfect human condition like everyone else and there is nothing fundamentally flawed about you at all. You let go of the overgeneralized distortion and see your flaws as part of yourself, but not who you are in a bigger sense. When you integrate your shadow and make friends with it, you feel whole and balanced. You begin to develop very intimate relationships where you feel accepted and supported and you revel in this deep connection. Becoming open to CONNECTION allows you to bring your gifts to the world in a much more powerful way while you enjoy fruitful relationships that strengthen your inner core.

THINKING vs. FEELING preference in the Structure Tilt

There are two STRUCTURE TILTS; one with a preference for FEELING and one with a preference for THINKING. Your TILT STACK indicates which one is your dominant preference, but both are strong in you regardless. If your Tilt stack indicates that Wisdom is above Courage, you may be more focused on objectivity, discipline and subject matter expertise. If your Tilt stack indicates that COURAGE is above Wisdom, you may be more focused on integrity, morality and decisiveness. WINGS: Your two WINGS are IMPACT and CLARITY, and the goal is to develop character strength in both wings so it is easier to develop your SHADOW (CONNECTION) and integrate the denied aspects of yourself to complete your development journey. When you actualize all four Tilts you can then operate from a more sturdy sense of wholeness and contribute to the world in bigger ways.

Ideal Work Environment

When you are Tilting in Structure, you are deeply focused on masterminding and executing a complicated work task. For this reason, you require a quiet climate where you will not be interrupted. Social interaction, if any, is only desired if it relates to the task at hand and only in forms that do not interrupt the flow of cognitive focus. If you do not ensure that you are protected by this kind of climate you could become rather irritable and angry. Others who want to connect with you will encounter an unwilling and even recalcitrant response. When you're in Structure, socializing is just not of interest and you want to be left alone with the mastery of the huge task you are tackling with veracity. In order to ensure that you take care of yourself during this time, you may want to express your intentions to your loved ones and social connections so that they know why you are non-responsive. Give them a time estimate for how long you plan to focus and express your reasons. If they know ahead of time and they realize how important this task is to you, then they will willingly leave you alone, aware that you will come back to being open and social when the time is right. It's only when they think you are abruptly dismissing time spent with loved ones entirely, that others will judge you for your relentless focus on work.

Social Perception

When you are tilting in STRUCTURE, others may see you as:

Note: The kind of intelligence you apply most here is sequential thinking.

Highly focused on tasks.
Capable of deep concentration.
Able to architect complex systems.
Strong-minded and capable.
Certain about your plan of action.
Able to work long hours.
Tenacious about your goals.
Building things that create order.
High degree of attention to quality.
Concerned with stability.
Complex problem-solving.

When you are OVER-tilting in STRUCTURE, others may see you as:

Withdrawn & socially avoidant.
Obsessive about specific details.
Emotionally detached & avoidant.
Harsh with your opinions.
Blunt with your truth.
The police of preciseness.
The police of correctness (i.e, grammer, spelling, etc).
Forceful about your convictions.
Always right.
Superior to others.
Driven about tasks.
Overly focused on the integrity of others (or lack of it).
The judge of others.

What's really going on is that you want to be left alone to accomplish an important and complex task (or tasks). You see social interaction as an interruption of that work and therefore may come across with a persona that will push them away with the behaviors above. The truth: You fear that something is going to fall apart and then you or others will be vulnerable in some way. Be gentle with yourself and realize that the world won't fall apart without you. You are even more harsh with yourself in your inner language than you are with others. Be kinder to yourself and you will begin to show up in a better way. If you pay attention to your motives and shift from fear to strength, you will accomplish amazing tasks that have an expansive and profound influence in the world.

Team Strategy
The best way for others to successfully interact with you when you are Tilting in Structure:

Ask them to...

Be direct and succinct.
Be specific and precise.
Be mindful about interrupting unnecessarily.
Be prepared and organized.
Give feedback directly with supporting facts.
Don't be lazy or ask me to do what you could do on your own.
Be self-sufficient and contribute to the task.
Hold your emotions for another time.
Remind me to take a break to incubate my ideas.
Wait until there seems like a natural break before interrupting.
Protect me from interruption by others.
Use correct grammar, spelling and rules PLEASE!
Do what you say you are going to do.

Value to the enterprise

You execute work efficiently & brilliantly
You are highly focused & planful in architecting detailed projects
You can handle a large number of related tasks quickly
You don't distract others from work so you increase overall productivity
If left alone, you can knock out 3-4 times the work of people in other Tilting patterns.
You are the expert of detailed architectures or systems.
You are highly disciplined and work with precision.
You care about high quality work done efficiently.
You will build things that provide sustainability for the enterprise.

2. The Impact Tilt

Description: (Combines Resilience Character Strengths & Courage Character Strengths)

"Impact" Way of Being: Organized for Innovation. Employs Imaginative Reasoning Skills.

When you are Tilting in IMPACT it means that you appear to be focused on connecting IDEAS and ACTION and have a natural proclivity for inventing new solutions that offer creative imagination through change. Comfortable with risk, you like taking a new idea and putting it into action.

TEAM ROLE: The Change Catalyst

TOP CHARACTER STRENGTHS: Your greatest gift to the world is INNOVATION, especially strategic solutions that require a blend of novel thinking and emotional confidence despite the unknowns. Your brain is wired to connect the dots quickly in a holistic way and catalyze them into outcomes that bring fresh new ideas into practical form.

PASSIONS: Your top passions are related to futuristic ideas, concepts, strategies and actions. Your top thinking skill is imagination of futuristic states and your top feeling skill is decisiveness in the midst of uncertainty and risk.

SHADOW (Denied-self): The thing you most resist is being still and patient because it distracts you from your goal, which is about bringing what you imagine into the world in real form. You might say you have an allergy to spending time doing thorough homework to gain CLARITY (the Tilt opposite your preference) because you rely on your gut instinct and don’t have the patience to slow down and do the deeper analysis.

AVOIDANCE STRATEGY (avoidance of your shadow): You might unwittingly be tempted to view others as less powerful and decisive than you, so you run ahead of them and distance yourself from the one thing you need most; the discernment for making well-thought out decisions. You like to MOVE fast and avoid sitting still because you tend to create better while you are in motion. This contributes to your avoidance of being still and listening to the emotions inside of you.

FAULTY STORY: Your inner story is that you must keep moving forward in order to avoid boredom or sadness, but deep down your true fear is that you are not all that comfortable being alone with yourself as it might make you face feelings you’d rather suppress.

DEVELOPMENT GOAL: As you actualize and grow, you realize that you can enjoy alone time and quiet your busy mind because the emotions you avoid can actually inform growth in discernment. By paying attention to emotions rather than suppressing them, you are now able to be quiet and experience an inner calmness inside that you didn’t know you had. When you integrate your shadow and make friends with it, you feel whole and balanced. This allows you to bring your gifts to the world in a much more powerful way.

THINKING vs. FEELING preference in the Impact Tilt:

There are two IMPACT TILT preferences; one with a preference for FEELING and one with a preference for THINKING. Your TILT STACK indicates which one is your dominant preference, but both are strong in you regardless. If your Tilt Stack indicates that RESILIENCE is higher than COURAGE then you may be more focused on ideas, novelty, freedom, individuality, creativity, aesthetics, and inspiration. If your Tilt Stack indicates that COURAGE is higher than RESILIENCE, then you may be more focused on decisiveness, risk-taking, persistence and confidence with an underlying urgency to take action in service of justice.

WINGS: Your two WINGS are STRUCTURE & CONNECTION, and the goal is to develop character strength in both wings so it is easier to develop your SHADOW (CLARITY) and integrate the denied aspects of yourself to complete your development journey. When you actualize all four Tilts you can then operate from a more sturdy sense of wholeness and contribute to the world in bigger ways.

Ideal Work Environment

When you are Tilting in IMPACT, you are very focused on the compelling idea you have about the future and how to move it into action fast. For this reason, you require a lot of autonomy and wide open space to bring your vocal expression into the world in a big way. Contemplation, if any, is not reasonable given that you have to beat others to market with your ideas. If you do not ensure that you have already done your homework to ensure your idea is credible, then you could risk too much on a hunch and unfounded support. Others who want to connect with you will encounter a fast-paced mover and shaker that is dismissive at times. When you're in Impact, socializing is important but only to persuade others about the vision and to ensure that they are on board and loyal to you and the cause. In order to ensure that you take care of yourself during this time, you may want to express your intentions to your loved ones and social connections so that they know why you are so busy and active. Give them a time estimate for how long you plan to be otherwise occupied with carrying out your plan and express your reasons. If they know ahead of time and they realize how important this vision is to you, then they will willingly offer their support, aware that you will come back to being still and quiet when the time is right. It's only when they think you are abruptly dismissing their input, that others will judge you for your lack of attention to their needs.

Social Perception

When you are tilting in IMPACT, others may see you as:

Note: The kind of intelligence you apply most here is imaginative thinking.

Creative & Innovative.
Intuitive sensing.
Long-term futuristic envisioning.
Holistic & systemic reasoning.
Connecting disparate ideas.
Determined goal focus.
Visual & abstract reasoning.
Concerned with aesthetics.
Conceptual, big-picture focused.
Idealistic about the future.
Challenging the status quo.
Challenging old assumptions.
Confidence in intuitive vision.
Creative problem-solving.
Metaphoric storytelling.

When you are OVER-tilting in IMPACT, others may see you as:

Dismissive & inattentive.
Impatient with delays.
Uninterested in debating the issues.
Fast-paced to the detriment of others.
Arrogant about your ingenuity.
Speak the truth without noticing the impact.
Results-oriented to a fault.
Eccentric in your ideas about the future.
Forceful about your vision.
Strong-willed about having your way.
Step on others to get results.

What's really going on is that you have a gift for noticing the systemic trends that are unfolding and have an original way of preparing for the convergence of these events. You see what needs to happen, you have a vision about how to alter the future in some way and you want everyone to trust that you know what you are doing. It requires a certain amount of hubris to speculate about an uncertain future, but you have a strong hunch that may be based on a fully informed intuition. You, therefore, may come across with a persona that appears arrogant and will be dismissive of any obstacles that stand in your way. The truth: You fear that the world is headed for disaster and that you need to be the one to save it. Slow down and listen to the quiet inner wisdom inside yourself and realize that the world may end up just fine without you but trust your instincts and proceed for your own satisfaction and you may very well do great things. You are even less patient with yourself than you are with others. That sense of urgency could get you into trouble so slow down and attend to the views of others trying to help you see the potential risks associated with your plan. Be patient with yourself and you will begin to show up in a better way. If you shift from fear to strength, you may actualize your full potential which is to invent or innovate futuristic, novel ideas that truly could change the world.

Team Strategy

The best way for others to successfully interact with you:

Ask others to...

Be direct and assertive, but friendly.
Be cooperative and offer support.
Provide information about the risks in a matter-of-fact way.
Don't stonewall or resist the forward motion.
Carefully present risks in a matter-of-fact way.
Give feedback directly and explain how it connects to my vision.
Don't be overly-detailed in explanations.
Be self-sufficient and contribute to the team.
Don't talk too much or be an obstacle.
Remind me to review the analytical data.
Be assertive if you think I am making a mistake.
Trust that I have a strong instinct that may be right.
Hold your own power and don't show weakness.

Value to the enterprise

They will put forward innovative ideas.
They protect their own team fearlessly.
They get results quickly.
Roll their sleeves up and work hard.
Futuristic about the future in an intuitive way.
They are generalists that are highly agile.
They are persuasive about getting others to carry out the plan.
They care about those who are vulnerable.
They will envision and catalyze change.

3. The Clarity Tilt

"Clarity" Way of Being: Organized for Interpretation. Employs Analytical Reasoning Skills.
Description: (Combines Wisdom Character Strengths & Humanity Character Strengths)

When you are Tilting in CLARITY it means you appear to be focused on connecting PEOPLE and INFORMATION and have a natural proclivity for interpreting and analyzing data that can ultimately affect people. Patient with doing your homework and investigating the details thoroughly, you like taking your time to dive deep and interpret the risk of various paths of action.

TEAM ROLE: The Quiet Genius

TOP CHARACTER STRENGTHS: Your greatest gift to the world is helping people get clear about what’s most important and come into ALIGNMENT through teaching or supporting human values for the common good. You are especially adept at assessing the risk associated with alternative paths of action so that an optimal solution can be clarified and implemented. Your brain is wired to go deep and slow down when a complex problem arises. In fact, your perspective is so thorough, that you see things and people as much more complex than others do and are patient enough to wait until everyone comes around and understands in their own way. This is because “you know how much you don’t know” and are aware of the variety of alternatives that can be considered.

PASSIONS: Your top passions are related to investigation, research, teaching, helping, supporting, and advising. Your top thinking skill is analytical processing and risk assessment, which requires great focus and understanding of human values. Your top feeling skill is being a trusted advisor, teacher or supporter.

SHADOW (Denied-self): The thing you most resist is moving forward without knowing all of the relevant facts because it distracts you from your goal, which is learning for the sake of learning and “after all, it could be worse to move ahead than to do nothing at all.” You might say you have an allergy to taking bold action that might cause adverse IMPACT (the Tilt opposite your preference) because you rely on knowing all of the relevant details and may be reluctant to take the personal risk involved.

AVOIDANCE STRATEGY (avoidance of your shadow): You might unwittingly be tempted to see others as less intelligent and thoughtful than you are, which might cause you to take pride in avoiding risks. This keeps you from achieving the one thing you need most; the aliveness that comes with moving forward in a way that expresses your individuality and personal power.

FAULTY STORY: Your inner story is that you would be risking too much if you were to act on your own wants and dreams. Deep down your true fear is that you would be successful and then you would lose all of the spare time you are able to devote to your interests.

DEVELOPMENT GOAL: As you actualize and grow, you realize that you can move forward and take some chances because many of the possible risks you envision will not actually happen so you don’t need to be paralyzed by so many “what-ifs”. When you integrate your shadow and make friends with it, you feel whole and balanced, knowing you are in command of your life and time. This allows you to bring your gifts to the world in a much more powerful way.

THINKING vs. FEELING preferences in the Clarity Tilt:

There are two CLARITY TILT preferences; one with a preference for FEELING and one with a preference for THINKING. Your TILT STACK indicates which one is your dominant preference, but both are strong in you regardless.

If your Tilt Stack indicates that WISDOM is higher than HUMANITY, then you are more focused on facts, reality, caution, reflection, discipline, research, and supported by an underlying desire for truth. If your Tilt Stack indicates that HUMANITY is higher than WISDOM, then you are more focused on people, compassion, kindness, helping, supporting, nurturing and supported by an underlying desire for harmony.

WINGS: Your two WINGS are STRUCTURE & CONNECTION, and the goal is to develop character strength in both wings so it is easier to develop your SHADOW (IMPACT) and integrate the denied aspects of yourself to complete your development journey. When you actualize all four Tilts you can then operate from a more sturdy sense of wholeness and contribute to the world in bigger ways.

Ideal Work Environment

When you are Tilting in CLARITY, you are very focused on the analysis of information that is important to people and specifically discerning ways to ensure that things remain safe and stable. For this reason, you require a lot of time to carefully evaluate a every way that risks could interfere with that safety. Contemplation is your friend and you have the patience to wait for the data to come in so that you can assess accurately. A great troubleshooter, you can see numerous ways that things could go wrong and will contribute to the stability of any system you are part of by ensuring that contingency plans are in place. Because you love investigating the details to get to the bottom of your theories, your judgment is highly credible and you are deeply trusted by others because you can support your theories with hard facts and deep bodies of knowledge. Others who want to connect with you will find a highly reliable and approachable advisor who will listen and can offer wise advice. You keep confidences easily and don't share information without thinking about the potential unintended consequences, so you are trusted by almost everyone. When you're in CLARITY, socializing is important but you are careful with your inner circle. You like people who are realistic and practical and are keenly intuitive about people. Especially with regard to whom can be trusted. In order to ensure that you take care of yourself when you are tilting in CLARITY, you may want to express your intentions to your loved ones and social connections so that they know why you are reluctant to move forward quickly and want more time to think things over. Give them a time estimate for how long you plan to investigate the risks and let them know that you do plan to support the goals of those your support. If they know ahead of time and they realize how important decisions are to you, then they will willingly wait for your views to surface, aware that you will move forward when the time is right. It's only when they think you are an obstacle to their vision and goals that others will judge you for your lack of willingness to embrace a reasonable amount of risk. Risk, supported by a sufficient amount of analysis is necessary for the accomplishment of big picture goals and you will contribute to the overarching success of any vision by providing your interpretation of the facts in a way that also supports forward momentum.

Social Perception

When you are tilting in CLARITY, others may see you as:

Note: The kind of intelligence you apply most here is analytical thinking.

Investigation skills.
Analysis of detailed information.
Interest in historical evidence.
Interpretation of highly complex information.
Concern for the welfare of humanity.
Nurturing about what serves people.
Interested in supporting others with advice.
Risk assessment.
Troubleshooting risks.
Factual reporting that is accurate.
Strong critical reasoning.
Acute discernment about risk.
Collecting & investigating details.
Figuring out how complex things work.
Supporting others about your interests.
Studying all of the facts about something.
Collecting things & information.

When you are OVER-tilting in CLARITY, others may see you as:

Very risk-averse.
Patient to a fault.
Focus on the past and historical evidence.
Stopping forward momentum with objections.
You always start with NO in negotiations.
You may go along without being truly aligned.
Withhold too much when others need your perspective.
Analysis paralysis.
Conservative about your views.
Fearful about anything risky.
Immobilized by too many choices.
Paranoid and worrying.
Acquiesce at your own expense.
Minimize your own value.
Study things without applying them.

What's really going on is that you have a gift for investigating subjects that require deep analysis. You worry that if you or others move forward too quickly, some facts will be missed and you could prevent disastrous consequences that may affect people. You want plenty of time to dive deep and study the potential outcomes that are possible. You often feel others are too quick to act and wish they would be more cautious. You don't really intend to stop others from what they want to do, but you start with NO and will be quick to state the risks. Therefore people often mistake your initial response as a block to their goals. What you really want is time to evaluate the decision and if you share this, others won't have such a negative reaction to your early objections. You don't trust intuition and want to dig into the historical facts that can be trusted because of empirical evidence. People who move forward on a hunch confound you and you simply can't relate to such an approach to decision-making. Highly logical, you therefore may come across with a persona that appears defensive and risk-averse. The truth: You fear that following intuition will end in disaster and that you need to be the one to save everyone by stopping them from quick action but your approach may make you seem unsupportive. If you can express your intention to move forward after you have enough time to analyze the decision and can give an estimate about the time to you, others may not react so negatively to your concerns. Explain that you have every intention of supporting them, but that you have something important to contribute to the stability of the situation as you go forward. Your temptation will be to withdraw and even withhold your judgment and let people move forward to make their own mistakes. In this case, they will not have the benefit of your deeper kind of wisdom and discernment, so this is not effective for you in the long run. Increasing your sense of urgency a mere 5% could get you the traction you need and enable alignment to the vision. Remind yourself that most of the risks you envision never come true and position yourself as a consultant with those you want to support and you will begin to show up in a better way. If you shift from fear to strength, you may actualize your full potential which is to protect and stabilize the entity you serve. Being more assertive and trusting your inner wisdom is the most important shift you can make to add higher levels of contribution.

Team Strategy

The best way for others to successfully interact with you:

Ask others to...

Be patient & give you time to align in your own time.
Join you in investigating a little deeper.
Listen to information about the risks involved.
Encourage you to support the vision.
Encourage you to be assertive.
Share what you know, which is more than others often know.
Don't move too quickly without the supporting facts.
Ask you what you need to move forward.
Avoid reckless action that will alienate you.
Understand that it takes time for you to trust others.
Know that you don't mind being in a supportive role.
Trust that I rely on facts and historical evidence.
Encourage me to assert my choices instead of going along.

Value to the enterprise

They will know the facts.
They protect the best interest of all.
They will warn of the potential risks.
Spend time studying and researching detailed information.
Be discerning about who can be trusted.
They are specialists who know a lot about certain subjects.
They are highly reliable and loyal.
They care about what is good for all.
They will exercise solid judgment.

They will be organized and provide stability.

4. The Connection Tilt

"Connection" Way of Being: Organized for Collaboration. Employs Social/Interpersonal Skills.

Description: (Combines Character Strengths in Humanity & Resilience)

When you are Tilting in CONNECTION it means you appear to be focused on connecting PEOPLE and IDEAS and have a natural intuition for reading other people’s emotions. You know how to lean into their needs to give them precisely what they appear to want. Comfortable with going into a situation without much information in advance, you like having to quickly interpret the cues and improvise.

TEAM ROLE: The Cross Pollinator

TOP CHARACTER STRENGTH: Your greatest gift to the world is COLLABORATION, especially assessing the talents of others and how they can come together to benefit the whole group. The great maven of networking, you know a lot of people and can go deep with them quickly to get to know them personally. Your brain is wired to tune in to how people are responding to the environment as it happens, so you are great at socializing ideas with the right audience to get widespread buy-in, and usually have a mission in mind at any given time. In fact, your social intuition is so thorough, that you will worry about what the other person is experiencing and can’t resist helping them think it through so they get on board with the right ideas.

PASSIONS: Your top passions are related to advising, counseling, facilitating, entertaining and supporting those people and ideas you believe in. Your top thinking skill is social/emotional processing which requires emotional recognition skills such as reading face and body language. Your top feeling skill is being a trusted advisor or supporter who can persuade others to join in your enthusiasm.

SHADOW (Denied-self): The thing you most resist is structure or rules-based environments, because they distract you from your goal, which is strategic improvisation in response to an ever-changing environment. You might say you have an allergy to being restricted or constrained by STRUCTURE (the Tilt opposite your preference) because you like to keep your options open. Because you think better when you are talking out loud, you can be confusing to others who think you have landed on a decision, when in fact, you are just socializing options. Or you may become overwhelmed because you have left too many options open.

AVOIDANCE STRATEGY (avoidance of your shadow): You might unwittingly be tempted to view others as controlling authority figures that you need to work around with clever strategies designed to let you fly under the radar and be continually underestimated. Your distance yourself from the one thing you need most; the discipline and commitment to architect well-thought out plans for your strategies.

FAULTY STORY: Your inner story is that you want everyone to work together in harmony and get along like intelligent adults with the utmost in respect for all. It surprises you when adults are less than mature or disrespectful to one another and you can be a bit laissez faire about or dismiss those who are engaged in conflict, as un-evolved and socially inferior.

DEVELOPMENT GOAL: As you actualize and grow, you realize that you can acknowledge your own inner anger and right to stand in your convictions more strongly. You begin to realize that if you take a position, it allows you to execute your plans more effectively and spend less time taking care of other people’s emotions and social expectations. You learn to say no to the constant demand on your social skills, learn to say yes to yourself and therefore begin to accomplish your own goals in life. When you integrate your shadow (STRUCTURE) and make friends with it, you feel whole and balanced. This allows you to bring your gifts to the world in a much more powerful way.

THINKING vs. FEELING preferences in the Connection Tilt:

There are two CONNECTION TILT preferences; one with a preference for FEELING and one with a preference for THINKING. Your TILT STACK indicates which one is your dominant preference, but both are strong in you regardless.

If your Tilt Stack indicates that RESILIENCE is higher than HUMANITY, then you will be more focused on strategy, ideas, optimism, inspiration and persuasion, all supported by an underlying desire for novelty. If your Tilt Stack indicates that HUMANITY is higher than RESILIENCE, then you will be more focused on people, compassion, kindness, helping, supporting, nurturing, all supported by an underlying desire for harmony.

WINGS: Your two WINGS are CLARITY and IMPACT. The goal is to develop character strength in both wings so it is easier to develop your SHADOW (STRUCTURE) and integrate the denied aspects of yourself to complete your development journey. When you actualize all four Tilts you can then operate from a more sturdy sense of wholeness and contribute to the world in bigger ways.

Social Perception

When you are tilting in CONNECTION, others may see you as:

What's really going on is that you want to be free to do what you love which is connecting people and ideas. You see social interaction as the most important work you have to offer and therefore may come across with a persona that will push away anything that distracts you from people. The truth: You fear that people will not approve of something you are involved in and that your reputation will be negatively affected in some way. Since you see your social status as the most important aspect of your power, you will treat anything that tarnishes or reflects on you in a way that is not in alignment with yours values is supremely important. If you begin to get in touch with your own convictions and become willing to stand in power about them, even if others don't approve, your inner and outer perception of integrity will increase. You realize that even if you think everyone loves and approved of you, this is not really true. They will respect you even more if you stand for your views and take a strong position about them publically. Focus more on doing your best at tasks that contribute to the mission and you will begin to show up in a better way that increases respect by others. If you pay attention to your own voice and goals you will actually gain even move approval by others. They want to know where you stand and respect you for standing your ground and doing what you say you will do to contribute to the work in practical ways. Even if it's not as detailed or accurate as others may be, your work will be appreciated and help others see what is important to you. As you shift from fear to strength, you will accomplish amazing tasks that have an expansive and profound influence in the world by bringing them together around common ideals.

Team Strategy

The best way for others to successfully interact with you when you are Tilting in CONNECTION:

Ask them to..

Consider the unintended impact on others.

About the Four Kinds of Human Will Bookmark

Two Kinds of Emotional Will.

The two polarities of heart & gut.

Heart/Humanity:

The Will to Serve: Some of us work extra hard to serve one another or to serve the greater good. We become exceptionally interested in harmony among the tribe, or healing and nurturing one another. This natural set of human traits exemplify the lover or healer in us and brings wonderful benefits for helping us survive unfriendly environments through encouraging a tribal community that keeps us well. But if we experience pain as a result of not being accepted by the “tribe” we belong to early in life, or love and acceptance is withheld, then our unconscious psyche may exaggerate this need for acceptance and distort it into an overused hunger for approval.

Gut/Courage:

The Will to Challenge: Some of us work extra hard to challenge the status quo. To speak the words that surface the ugly truth. To take risks in the face of uncertainty all in service of justice and fairness. To fight the good fight. To destroy the old and pioneer in the new. This natural set of human traits exemplify the warrior or hero in us and helps us test our mettle in an unfriendly environment. It allows us to push forward into the unknown with courage and might. But if we experience pain as a result of not having appropriate autonomy over our circumstances early in life, then our unconscious psyche will exaggerate this need for power and distort it into an overused hunger for power.

How to get into balance: If you are over-using traits in the humanity (heart) quadrant, the developmental goal is to practice strengthening your Will to Challenge (courage). Conversely, if you are over-using traits in the Gut/Courage quadrant, the developmental goal is to practice strengthening your Will to Serve (heart). In other words, each of the emotional quadrants are a balance to each other and you need to be able to do both at one time. i.e., how can you be both instead of just one or the other.

Two Kinds of Cognitive Will.

The two polarities of head and spirit.

Head/Wisdom:

The Will to Achieve: Some of us work extra hard to achieve status and position through focused effort on becoming and expert. We become exceptionally interested in knowing everything there is to know about our favorite subjects and narrow our field of interest to know more than anyone else about this topic. This natural set of human traits for needing to dive deep into knowledge serves us well and drives us to learn from the past. But deep down it can also be a disguise for an underlying need for safety in the face of risk. If we experience a lack of respect for who we are in our early years, we may develop an unconscious need to achieve status over others and distort it into a overused hunger for status.

Spirit/Resilience:

The Will to Create: Some of us work extra hard to be different, unique and original in an effort to stand out from the crowd. We get energized by staying ahead of the trends and seeing or creating the future before others do. We love ideas that are novel and creative so we want to be first to express them. We especially loath being bored or plain and develop an appreciation for beauty through creative expressions of all kinds. This natural set of human traits to stay ahead of the pack serves our need to be creative about solving problems that come up as a result of constant change. But deep down it can also be about feeling like we are not special. If we experience a lack of attention and are not listened to as a unique individual when we are young, we may develop an unconscious need to prove that we are special and distort it into a hunger for attention.

How to get into balance: If you are over-using traits in the Wisdom (head) quadrant, the developmental goal is to practice strengthening your Will to Create. Conversely, if you are over-using traits in the Resilience (spirit) quadrant, the developmental goal is to practice strengthening your Will to Achieve. Each of the kinds of cognitive will are a balance for one another in the same way as the two kinds of emotional will. Balance in all four is the goal for inner strength which results in outer positive influence.

"When we overuse as aspect of will, our unconscious needs are in charge instead of our true self being more consciously in charge." Pam Boney, Author of Tiltology.
